The Way Forward

The work started many years ago by the well-loved Fr Vincent Kanyankole RIP, is being continued by the Rev Fr Vincent’s Child Fund, which is a registered Community Based Organisation (CBO).  The Diocese of Jinja has appointed Fr Ronald Mutabazi to carry on Fr Vincent’s work in Uganda and he leads the CBO. We are completely confident that Fr Vincent’s generous, compassionate and loving life has secured him a wonderful new life in heaven with Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, who he loved and served for many years.

The CBO is run by 4 local people who knew and worked with Fr Vincent. 1. Fr Ronald Mutabazi, previously the spiritual director of the St Gonzaga Minor Seminary in Iganga. He is now in charge of the new parish of St Joseph’s in Ibaako. 2. Kennedy Borgere, the Headteacher of Bishop Willigers secondary school in Namunyumya started by Fr Vincent. He is a nephew of Fr Vincent. 3. Annet Nakadama, who looks after the orphans when they are not at school. 4. Edith Atim, bursar of the school and an accountant.

We continue to raise funds to educate and care for 32 poor children and young people in the Diocese of Jinja. We are funding 3 poor young men at St Gonzaga Minor Seminary who are hoping to become priests. We also raise funds for the building and maintenance of church buildings. We know that most people send donations towards the care and education of the poor and deprived children and young people. Others like to fund the building of church buildings. Monies received by JustPortion are always used in accordance with donors’ wishes.  Sign up to our newsletter if you wish to receive regular updates on the work of the charity.

Your donations to JustPortion continue to make a big difference to the lives of 32 children and young people, 14 of whom are orphans.

The Parish
The Parish of St. Joseph’s, Ibaako is in the district of Bugweri, Uganda. It has about 4,700 parishioners spread around an area of about 1,000 square kilometres (625 square miles). It has 16 Outstations which are visited on a regular basis to administer the Sacraments. The Parish now has a Priest’s house but no church. The parishioners are poor subsistence farmers with no regular income. Their lives can be extremely difficult when the rains delay or when the rains are too heavy during the harvest time. When they are hungry, they ask the priest for food. The average Sunday collection in the Parish is £4 which is not enough to support the priestly ministry.

The Children
Uganda has many orphans and vulnerable children who face difficult lives. It is a serious problem. The CBO is supporting and educating 14 orphans as well as paying for the education of 18 other young people.  To do this they rely upon donations from the UK. These 32 children and young people are being given a good start in life despite their personal situation. Educational fees are approximately £60, £100 and £150 per month for Junior School, Senior School and University students respectively. Law and Medical students cost £200 per month. In addition, there are costs for food, clothing, transport, medical fees, accommodation and educational materials.

The fees and living costs for these 32 students amount to about £9,500 per term. The children attend boarding schools, and a house is rented for the orphans to call their home. Annet looks after the children during the holidays and when they are sick or have been sent home because of an outbreak of sickness at their school.

The Parish House
With help from UK donors over the past few years, the Priest's house and the staff house were completed in March 2025. The pictures below show various build stages of construction.

The Church
The hardcore foundation for St Joseph’s church was laid in 2024 but nothing has been done since (picture below). The Diocese of Jinja has no funding earmarked for building the church, so it is hoping that funds will be donated by UK residents. In the meantime church services are held in the local school.
It is quite normal in Uganda to build over a number of years as funds become available. Fr Vincent wished to build a church to seat 320 people. The estimated total cost is about £100,000. The next building stage will be to secure the site and then lay the concrete foundation. This is likely to cost about £13,000.
